Welcome to 2012

Hello Space Racers, I hope you had a great holiday. Some Space Racers have already been competing in our Wednesday afternoon Summer Series and some of you also attended our training camp. It’s been great to see you.

I think you enjoyed Space Racing last year but unfortunately we won’t be able to run it in Term 1 this year. However we will be back in action in Term 3.

The good news is that if you are in Grade 6 or above, you can join in the Schools competition on Wednesday afternoons beginning on February 22. It is a 6-week season, culminating with the Southern All Schools Championships on March 28. Full details are in the attached document.

It’s a bit different to Space Racing. You can start any time you like between 3:30pm and 6:00pm. You don’t run in teams, but you can run with friends or an adult if you wish. Or you can just run by yourself and try to beat your mates.

We’d love to see you there and there will be lots of people around to help get you started. No need to register until you turn up and the cost is $5 per event – this gets you a map and a loan of an electronic dibber.

Jane and I are looking forward to seeing you again. Please ring me if you have any queries on 62278649

Mike

Thanks to all

Kid’s Rule Day finished with many teams finding enough of the clues to finish in under 15 minutes. Everybody had a lot of fun and Space Racers showed their family and friends what they had learnt over 5 weeks of competition.

The race was followed by the presentations. All competitors received a Participation Certificate and the three top teams, Galileo, Lynx and Andromeda received medals. Galileo, from Hutchins, was the top team and their school holds the trophy until the next series.

Well done to all competitors and many thanks to the supporters and helpers who made the Space Racing Pilot such a success.

Week 6 Kid’s Rule Day

Hi Space Racers, Kid’s Rule Day is this Thursday December 1st. Bring along a parent, reative or friend to Wentworth Park and take them for a space race to show them what you have learned over the last 5 events.

Presentations will be followed by a BBQ. There will be a sausage in bread and a cup of soft drink for a gold coin donation. If you do not eat sausages then bring your own food to cook.

See you there for our final BLAST OFF for 2011.

GPS Tracks Added

We have just added a number of GPS tracks from the first three weeks of Space Racing.

From Space Race 1 there is now the track of Team Gemini posted on the Week 1 Results page.

From Space Race 2 there are GPS tracks for Team Oberon, Team Callisto and Team Lynx on the Week 2 Results page.

From Space Race 3 there is a GPS track for Team Oberon on the Week 3 Results page.

Remember if one of your team have access to a GPS you can bring it each week. Download the GPS track when you get home, save it in the GPX format and email it to smaz@isage.net.au to have it uploaded so you can see where you actually went and to share it with other teams.

Week 3 at Hutchins

Week 3 saw the Space Racing teams move to Hutchins for a race around the grounds on a Hutchins Galaxy Map. Being careful to use the underpasses, the teams raced around the Middle and Junior Schools, Senior School, top oval and adjacent Lambert Park. While dark clouds threatened, the rain held off and competitors stayed dry. Plovers had young chicks to protect and teams were careful to give them plenty of room.

Close to 4:30pm the action began as team members with the space keys lined up to make contact with the Start Space Station. Legs were flying as the teams raced to visit the 19 Space Stations. One station had mysteriously disappeared after having been locked in place earlier in the afternoon.

Home ground advantage was evident for the teams from Hutchins; however, fast legs and good map reading saw many teams arriving back early having collected all of the points Nearly all teams returned with the 30 minute allocation. Well done everyone!

During the clean up the lost Space Station was found, so the day concluded on a happy note for the organisers.

Many thanks to The Hutchins School who hosted the event.

Next week (Week 4 Thurs Nov 17) the action is at Taroona Primary School. Follow the Channel Hwy down to Taroona, turn left at the Primary School and continue down to the lower car park between the Primary and Secondary Schools. The registration will be at the shelter shed near the oval. Look for the Space Racing Banner.

If you have any queries please ring Jane on 0400672547.
